Are online photography schools a legitimate way to learn photography?
- I just answered Emily G thusly: A very wise old photographer once told me that a client doesn't care if you had to hang upside down from a rope to get a shot, they only want the shot. You do not need to go to school to learn photography, you need to get out there and start making images for publications or customers. You will learn soon enough if you're making the right moves or not, and you will get paid for it as well. Back in the old days of film perhaps there was something to a photography school because darkroom work was like cooking, and a school could cut short the time it took to make a GOOD consomme as opposed to just consomme, but with digital this is no longer the case. The greatest part of photography is NOT having a "gift. " The greatest part of photography is knowing how to make the shot that will please the client. Those stupendous photos you see of the moon rising over a New Mexican town, or of a glaring bulldog of a Prime Minister in wartime are because the photographer was in the right place at the right time for a once - in - a - lifetime shot. Wanna know the three - step formula for making pictures like Ansel Adams? One: live at Yosemite; Two: go to one of the great vistas and wait for the light and weather; Three: shoot the shot. If you're making pictures your customers like and are willing to pay for then who cares if you went to school?
- Check out the Art Ins ute of Pittsburgh Online Division. Despite the previous persons post, obtaining your Bachelor's is never a bad idea. Rigorous course work, qualified instructors and a wide variety of cl es all on your own schedule. The feedback I have received far surp es that of the traditional cl room schooling. Understanding and learning the technical side of photography alleviates a lot of the frustration better preparing you for success. Go for it. You only live once. Just make sure you research whatever school you are going to attend, do not waste your money
- Despite what that other person said, school for photography can be a very valuable thing, especially if you wish to learn dark room techniques. No, online photography school is a horrible idea. It would do nothing for you that you could not do yourself easier. However, face to face photography instruction is a valuable thing. Its really great to have someone who knows what they are doing who can give you feedback and can explain the things they do not understand. And the other person fails to realize that study photography is all about shooting. Thats all you do, but you will all so learn the proper techniques for shooting. It doesn't matter how much you shoot if you are doing it poorly. No one can possibly say that it is easier to struggle through learning everything on your own when it could be taught to you. However, online would just be waste of your time and money
