photography cameras: i want to start taking photos some arty some meaningful etc what type of camera do i need
- Art does not reside in the camera, it resides in the photographer. Start with the cheapest camera you can afford and do not get hung up on the technology many photographers invest so much in their camera, they miss the whole meaning of taking a picture, the impact of the image. Hone your art through simple exercises in seeing and capturing what you see without being distracted by the buzzers and whistles. Once your eye and the camera become friends, you can expand to a higher end camera that will allow you to "tweak" your images. At this step, it's all about subject and composition. The rest will follow
- Pick up a Nikon D40, it's a good robust DSLR with everything you need. You should find one for £300 or less. Once you have it get shooting, if the the pictures are any good then it's money well spent. It there not so hot, it's time to learn photoshop!
- During my photography alevel I used a Canon A1, It was not a digital camera as it's best to learn how to process and print using film and the wet room. Mine was second hand and cost about £100 from a good camera shop, there will most likely be one in your nearest town
- anything! it doesnt matter on the camera, its how you use it personally i recomend a cannon one, i used that during my photography A Levels
- Go to your local second hand camera shop and try some out be honest with the shop istants for what you want and what you want to do. I would recommend going digital as this will be far cheaper in the long run as film and developing is very expensive. unless you are going to blow these images up to A1 size you will only need something with about 6 mega pixels. Update 10 / 04 / 08 You will find a lot of pro film photographers out there that will keep on saying film is the way to go, the truth is film is on it's last legs and is getting more and more expensive. I have used both and still do but i have found far better results and improved my photography sales 3 times over by going digital. Digital is the now and the future the only people who want you to use film are the photographers that still think video is better than DVD / HD. If you are thinking of embarking on a course you will be asked to do both as is my sister, she is really good but she has perfected her skills on a digital camera and not film as this will cost to much money. Try Cannon EOS 350D / 400D / 10D / 20D or Nikon D40 Both these manafacturers will give you a great camera with a wide choice of lenses, which if you choose to upgrade you Camera DSLR in the future you can still use the old lenses on the new camera as long as they are the same make
- I totally agree, the camera is merely a tool, the end product is what matters, the image. The cl ic film camera for students has historically been the Pentax K1000, everything you want including good build quality and superb lenses at the cheapest price. It's a good make to stick to for a DSLR too. My first was a 'Spotmatic' in the sixties when I was a student and I still use them, currently a K10D. I have about 20 of them and they all still work perfectly. Actually just replaced the light seals on my 'Spotty', but it was on it's 50th birthday so I do not think I will complain! LOL For your last point you would need a telephoto lens. Chris
- I have a digital camera and if you want to see my photograpy check my question :
- Do you consider the following photos "arty"? Some of them have sold from art galleries all over the country and I recently had one published in "Light Leaks" magazine. I took them with my $30 Holga 120 FN film camera. Crap lens, no exposure control, grainy black and white film, light leaks, and vignetting. I have to agree with the other answers that there is no art in ANY camera. YOU have to make it happen. The camera is just a dumb tool. If you can not do it with a cheap camera, you can not do it with a fancy one. I would suggest you begin working with a 35mm film SLR. If you really want what film students have, then that is what you will need anyway. Film teaches you discipline. You learn exposure and composition. Digital CAN be a good learning tool, but most people do not use it as such. They just take a hundred photos when one could have done, and when one of them comes out good they say, wow, what a great shot. I am really a great photographer. Of course they have no idea of what they did and cannot repeat it. There are plenty of very nice used 35mm SLR cameras at B - H.
